High School Youth Sponsorship

Dear NWFASA,

As you know, Anakbayan Seattle is coordinating with Franklin High School and Chief Sealth High School student who are interested in attending this year's conference. As we run closer to the deadline, we are asking for help in raising funds for the high school youth so that they are able to participate in such a great event as conference. Please forward this email far and wide to those who can help sponsor the youth!

The youth from FHS and CSHS have committed to volunteer their time giving back to the community through programs at the Filipino Community Center of Seattle in return for the sponsor's generosity. Please read below (or attached document) from the youth asking for your help.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you!

------------

Dear Community Member,

The Northwest Filipino-American Student Alliance (NWFASA) is asking for your help to give the opportunity to members of Franklin High School, Chief Sealth's Filipino Club and other high school youth to learn and celebrate Filipino culture at this year's 15th annual NWFASA Conference at Washington State University.

The Filipino Clubs at Franklin High School and Chief Seattle High School, among others, consist of about 30 youth in each program. This spring, their plan is to attend the NWFASA Conference at WSU, but are not able to participate in this event without the support of the community. We are asking you to support their desire to learn and develop a stronger sense of their identity as Filipino youth, and be able to network with other strong Filipino Alliances as prospective students in colleges in the northwest. The Conference provides students an opportunity to gain exposure for a future after high school, and may even inspire students to seek possible mentorship by Filipino college students. This is life-changing opportunity for high school students to be involved in Filipino-specific educational workshops, and create dimensions to their outlook on life as a student, individual, and Filipino youth.

Both Franklin and Chief Sealth and Franklin have one of the highest population of Filipino students in the Seattle School District, and a high number of these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The cost per student to attend the NWFASA conference is a $65 registration fee which includes room and board for three days and two nights, meals for 2 days, but most importantly to participate in workshops that deal with Filipino identity.

Franklin High School Filipino Club, Chief Sealth Filipino Club and other Seattle area high schools thank you for your support in advance.

For more information on how to donate, please contact the NWFASA Alliance Finance Officer Janelle Quibuyen at nwfasa.finance@gmail.com or (360) 440-2761. Checks may be payable to "Washington State University FASA" and will be collected no later than Saturday, March 14, 2009.

----

The conference is a weekend-long event for student groups to gather and learn about leadership, networking, and team-building. It enables students to build a strong and unified community between all participating organizations, increases education and awareness, and promotes student activism and involvement. One full day is devoted to attending educational workshops catered to addressing issues affecting Filipino-American and Asian Pacific Islander communities. Workshops cover a wide range of topics such as identity issues, immigration, comfort women and sex trafficking, and many others. These workshops help shape members of the Filipino Clubs of Franklin and Chief Sealth into more critical and active individuals as they gain a better understanding of the issues affecting them and their communities.
